Testing Centers

The NTSAD International Tay-Sachs Carrier Testing Quality Control Program promotes accuracy of enzyme assay carrier testing using serum and leukocytes. An enzyme assay determines the level of Hex A activity in the blood. This method, as opposed to DNA analysis, is preferred because it will detect any of the over 100 identified and unidentified mutations in the Tay-Sachs gene. Serum is recommended for all carrier screens except women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills and all individuals taking insulin to screen carriers of the Tay-Sachs gene, in which cases leukocyte is more accurate.

The following laboratories participated in the 2010 NTSAD International Tay-Sachs Carrier Testing Quality Control Program.
